Traceability of automotive part casting

At the end of the automated VC (Verification and Check) casting process, if the part passes the quality check, a 2D Data Matrix machine-readable code is applied by a Technifor CN210C rapid indent marking machine. This 2D code measures 9.4x9.4mm and is capable of encoding 24 numeric digits or 16 alphanumeric characters. In this application, it contains the part number (8 digits), a unique part identifier (6 digits), a supplier reference number, and the shift and date codes. When the power steering manufacturer receives the part, its first operation is to verify the Data Matrix code using a handheld reader connected to verification software. This verification process assures that this unique code will be valid for tracking the part through the entire assembly line using strategically positioned fixed cameras. The marking has provided a 100% read rate and has required no adjustment for 150000 parts.
